Recommended Pathways

Polytechnic / Training Providers

Structured programmes that combine river rescue, raft guiding, and complementary adventure activities.

  • Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology — Diploma programmes with specialised 3-4 week courses in river rescue and raft guiding
  • Tai Poutini Polytechnic (West Coast) — Certificates and diplomas covering whitewater rafting plus complementary adventure activities

Direct Operator Training

Candidates with prior river experience can inquire directly with rafting companies about training programmes. Many operators run in-house training for new guides during the season build-up.

Coming From Overseas?

International raft guide qualifications are not directly transferable to NZ awards. New Zealand has historically led the commercial rafting industry globally, and our qualification framework reflects that — guides from overseas still need to complete an NZRA assessment to ensure they hold the skills required for the rivers they intend to guide here.

In practice, this means enrolling in the appropriate grade (Grade 2, 3, or 4/5) and completing assessment units with an NZRA-approved assessor. Your overseas experience will absolutely help you prepare — but the assessment itself is required.

NZRA — Advocates for the Industry

Your membership funds the work that keeps commercial rafting viable in Aotearoa. NZRA sits at the table with the organisations that shape how the industry operates.

  • A voice with government and regulators — commercial rafting now operates under the Adventure Activity Regulations (AAR) framework alongside WorkSafe. The rules were shaped with NZRA at the table.
  • Advocates for free-flowing rivers— NZRA actively advocates for the protection of New Zealand's free-flowing rivers. A healthy industry depends on healthy rivers, so we fight for both.
  • Owner of the qualification framework — originally developed in conjunction with Te Mahi Ako. In 2026, NZRA took full ownership of the qualification to ensure it remains fit for industry, governed by the people who actually run it.
  • Standards and safety — NZRA sets the operational, equipment, and guiding competence standards recognised across New Zealand.
  • Building the system— from qualification frameworks to the online platform you're using right now, NZRA builds the infrastructure the industry runs on.
  • International representation — NZRA administers National Raft Racing and selects teams to represent NZ at the IRF World Rafting Championships.
